School Groups

The Capital Prize Gold Mine offers special rates for school groups and other school related activities. We strive to accommodate the Colorado's school curriculum for the fourth grade study of Colorado western history and geology. Though a little difficult to navigate Georgetown's roads, we have a large parking lot for school buses. School buses MUST follow these instructions to get to the mine. Do not rely  on your phones to get you here on the correct roads once you are in Georgetown.

Since schools are usually in session during the winter season, special accommodations can be made to have tours during non-published times. Please call or email to make special arrangements. 303-596-2468 or capitalprize@yahoo.com

  • School Groups, parents and school chaperones are $13

  • School teachers are free.

Some special considerations for school groups:

  • We ask for a minimum of one parent/chaperone/teacher per 15 students. We all know how excited our kids can get and this ratio makes it enjoyable and safe for everyone. If the school group is more than 25 total, then we may want to consider an "off" time.

  • Lunch: We do not have a single facility when it comes to an indoor lunch facility, but we can be creative. If it nice outside, we can have lunch outside on the grounds by the parking lot and on the firetruck. Inside we always have the option for about 50 to eat inside the south tunnel of the mine. We have a few seats in the mine, but most students must be willing to sit on the ground just like the miners did. The floor is covered with dry gravel.

  • We will send out an invoice as requested. If payment in cash will be made, please make advance arrangements to collect monies from the students ahead of time and we will make one transaction at check-in to speed up the process.

Things to consider for your visit

  • The Capital Prize Gold Mine is a well lit and safe environment. The mine is inspected every day by staff and monitored by the Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety.

  • The average temperature inside the mine is 49° Fahrenheit so a light jacket and closed toe shoes are recommended.

  • The adit (tunnel) is driven to  1,000 feet into the mountainside for tours. The mine adit extends to 3,200 feet and work is being done to open additional tour space.

  • The ground is level and the ceiling is generally above 6 feet so little stooping is required.

  • Tours are approximately 45 minutes - please allow extra time to enjoy gold panning, the historic sites  or a picnic lunch outside the mine.

  • Wheelchairs and strollers can have a difficult time in the mine due to the ore cart rail tracks.
