A mine needs a dependable way to bring fresh air into working areas and direct used air out. In its simplest form, ventilation creates an organized path for air to travel through the mine. Fresh air enters through an intake route, while stale air, dust, moisture, and any exhaust are directed toward a return route and discharged safely away from occupied areas.

Historically, miners depended heavily on natural drafts, mine openings, and basic mechanical methods. A tunnel connected to the surface at more than one point could develop airflow because of differences in elevation, temperature, and air pressure. That could help, but it was never a complete solution for every working area, especially as mines extended farther into the mountain.

Modern mining uses powered fans, ventilation doors, regulators, and, where needed, flexible ducting to move air where people and equipment are working. The exact arrangement depends on the mine's shape, the number of openings, the distance underground, the equipment in use, and the work being performed that day.
